How To Winterize House Plants

The cold winter months seem never ending for a plant lover like me. I have trained my plants to withstand a little rough weather and even the tropical plants can handle cold temps.

I know their limits though, so when I saw the freezing cold front on the forecast I knew it was time to bring some of my plants indoor.

Houseplants moved indoors during winter. Plant aesthetic. Watering can

Here's a list of things to take into account to make sure your house plants thrive this winter.

Know their preferred temperatures: Do a little research on how they live in their natural habitats. Some plants are more resilient than others and although you can push their limits a bit, you need to know when to bring them indoors if needed.

Light: Although any warmer place would do it in a pinch, it would be ideal to place them close to a window. I know thats not always possible though, so I also have a couple of these plant grow lights handy to make sure they get what they need.

Water: I continue watering all my plants throughout the winter even if I move them indoors. The difference is how often I do it. I like to use my handy moisture meter to know when my plants are thirsty, but you can also insert your fingers a couple a couple inches into the soil to check for moisture.

Moisture: As you probably know, indoor spaces tend to be really dry and we need to keep that in mind when it comes to taking care of our plants indoors. I try to keep a water spray within reach and use a humidifier to make sure the dry air from the heat vents doesn't affect my plants.

Fertilizer: A lot of people skip the fertilizer until spring but I find that my plants love their plant food during the winter too! I live and swear by my favorite plant food and continue applying it to my plants with every watering. I even see growth during the winter because of this fertilizer! It's amazing.

I know all plant lovers are looking forward to warmer temperatures but until then, let's enjoy our little indoor jungles while we can :)
